Since so many marriages end in divorce, it is no wonder why several people seek marriage counseling to help make their marriages work. When a marriage is on the rocks, marriage counseling can help to rebuild it. When couples attend therapy, some people consider it the last attempt to help make or break their marriage. Couples will understand their relationship and work together to make decisions or they will decide they are better off apart.

Marriage counseling is often called couples therapy. Couples that attend therapy are there to negotiate their differences and improve their marriage. Couples will be given communication tools to help them interact with their spouse and understand what their spouse feels. Couples will learn how to solve problems and argue in an effective manner, without letting their anger overtake them. A marriage and family therapist will guide the couple through their relationship and help them to understand their differences. They have specific tools to teach the couple how to have a healthier relationship.

For many people, marriage counseling is needed at a time when their marriage is on the rocks. Financial difficulty and raising children and the most common reasons why couples seek the help of a licensed therapist. Therapy sessions normally last an hour, and you may only need a few sessions to fix your problems. Other couples may need multiple sessions a week for several months in order to help them with their crisis.

No marriage is without conflict. A marriage takes a lot of work and it is easy to start nagging your partner about behaviors and other things that bother you. Each person is raised differently and they both bring their own ideas, beliefs, values, opinions, and personal history to their marriage. For some couples, their beliefs, values, ideas, and opinions are similar and this is why they are attracted to their spouse. Other couples are considered complete opposites and have opposing views on practically everything. Even if your beliefs and values are the same, your marriage is still bound for conflict somewhere.

Every marriage will hit a rocky point where the couple will be tested. Perhaps it is the other spouse's habits that start to get on your nerves, or you have lost your trust in your spouse. Without constant work on a marriage, communication begins to break down and couples stop caring about one another. A happy marriage will not work if there is not work done by both individuals.

When a couple hits a wall, fear, anger, aggression, stress, tension, sadness, and worry all start to creep into the marriage. Some people avoid the problems altogether and hope they will go away and fix themselves, other couples argue their problems out all the time. If the problems are not solved effectively, the problems will continue to grow and this is when a marriage sees physical and psychological problems. Depression is common in marriages that are having problems, as one or both partners may feel overwhelmed and saddened by the state of their relationship. When a marriage is failing, it can also cause stress and tension in the workplace and it will reflect to other family members and friends. People often feel compelled to take sides in the problems, causing the couple to push one another further away. When a marriage is in this state, therapy is needed. The marriage is literally on its last string and without the help of a licensed therapist, the couple may wind up divorced.

For some people, the only way to let out aggression and anger is physical violence. If domestic violence or abuse is happening in a marriage, it may be difficult for the therapist to fix the problems. Law enforcement many need to be involved if the spouse has yet to contact them. If the spouse fears for their safety, or the safety of their children, a violence shelter and law enforcement needs to be involved. Marriage counseling alone will not solve the problems of domestic violence.

Some people seek the advice of a therapist to keep their marriage healthy. They may not be experiencing any problems in their relationship, but they want to strengthen their relationship instead. A marriage counselor will help the couple understand one another better and they will help the couple strengthen their bond. Several people that are planning to get married seek the advice of a therapist to achieve a deeper meaning of their current relationship and fix their differences before they are married.

Marriage counseling is typically the same for every counselor, the main difference is in the way the therapist approaches the situations and the couple. Normally the sessions bring the couple together for a joint therapy session. The therapist will help the couple find out what is causing the conflicts in the marriage and teaches the couple how to resolve the problems in an effective manner. Both spouses will need to analyze their marriage and look for the good aspects in their marriage over the bad aspects of their marriage.

Couples are taught how to communicate with one another and work together to solve their problems. When a partner brings up a problem they have been having with the relationship, they are taught how to talk about this problem in a rational manner. The couple will be given a series of relationship tools to use that will help them solidify their marriage and build a healthy marriage for both parties.

A marriage counselor is there to help the couple express what they have been feeling. It is difficult for many people to talk about their problems, especially when they revolve around intimacy and money. A marriage counselor is trained on a wide variety of relationship issues and will have advice for every couple that comes with any problem. Some sessions may be completely silent as the couple is thinking about their problems and looking for ways to express them. Other sessions may pass quickly because the couple has brought their problems to the session and argues in front of the therapist. No matter how the session goes, the therapist will help the couple with whatever situation they bring to the session. A marriage counselor will not take sides in a marriage and will look at the overall picture and help the couple understand one another. They will evaluate the argument and help the other spouse understand why their partner is feeling this way.

Some couples will see their marriage improve after a few sessions, while others may see their differences exposed. If a couple feels their differences are vast, they may decide that divorce is the only option to keep both parties happy. Marriage counseling works the best when both parties attend the sessions. Some spouses refuse to attend counseling, which is why some people go by themselves. It may be more difficult to fix the problems in the marriage, but the person will be able to vent their frustrations and learn tools that may help them fix their marriage.

A marriage counselor or therapist needs to be licensed and certified. Seek out one that has undergone the proper training and can effectively help a couple understand one another and repair their relationship. Ask the counselor if they have received specialized training in couples counseling. A therapist should be a licensed mental health professional. Each state has different licensing and credentialing requirements, so you should contact your state's web site before hiring a therapist. For most states, a therapist needs to have a master's or doctoral degree, and must have advanced training in marriage and family therapy. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) offers credentials to licensed family and marriage therapists and they can provide a listing of certified therapists in your area.

Normally a therapist will work in private practice, although some work in clinics and in mental health centers. Larger companies often hire therapists to help their staff members deal with difficult situations. Hospitals and government agencies normally have two or three licensed therapists. Your family doctor will be able to refer you to a licensed therapist. Another way to seek out a good therapist is to ask your friends and family members for a referral. Contact your insurance company to find out if mental health care is provided under your plan. The health insurance company will also have a listing of licensed therapists in your area.

When you meet with a marriage counselor, you need to find out how long their sessions will last and how often they need to attend counseling. Before you meet with the therapist, ask them how much they charge and find out their policy on cancelled sessions. Some therapists will charge the full amount for a cancelled session, while others will charge half the normal amount. During the initial session, the therapist can gain a good understanding of your problems and will be able to decide how many sessions you will need as a couple to repair your marriage. The therapist should also provide an after hours number for you if you have an emergency.
