Just because you are a mom doesn't mean you have to dress like one. Of course not all moms dress poorly, but too many moms transition from fashionable, or at least semi-fashionable to down right sloppy. They put their time and energy into their children, and forget to put time and energy into themselves. So, then come things like stained oversized tees, and the dreaded mom jeans.

"Mom jeans" can be defined a number of ways, and most people have an idea of what they think of when they think mom jeans, but generally they are looked at as jeans that ride high on the stomach and back, that go up the bottom in a very unflattering way, and that flatten it so that it looks poochy and saggy, and just not attractive. Basically they are jeans that rise to the natural waist. Mom jeans are not flattering on anyone, and don't look good with anything. No matter how fashionable a top is, pairing it with mom jeans is just down right unfashionable.

So, why do moms wear these hideous jeans? Well, generally they are comfortable. They aren't flattering, and they aren't going to win you any fashion awards, but they certainly do the job. They wash easily, can be worn several days in a row without looking any worse for the wear, and they make for easy movement, etc.

Most moms who wear mom jeans hesitate to move to a more fashionable jean because of the discomfort they have. For example, a mom jean rides very high. They generally rise up to the natural waist, where the more fashionable jeans rest on the hips. So, when a mom wants to transition it can be uncomfortable. They fear leaning over (a normal thing to do when you have children) will expose their backside, butt crack, etc. They feel like they are constantly pulling up their pants and pulling down their shirt to cover their back.

What are the options? If you don't want to be the mom who wears "mom jeans" then look for jeans that ride high on the back, but low on the front. Many companies make them this way now so that you can wear them and be fashionable, while also being comfortable and modest.

The key is to shop for jeans for yourself. You want to look at several different cuts and rises, and try them on. Sit down, lean over, stretch up, and the like. Take the time to position yourself how you will generally be as a mom, this means sitting on the dressing room floor if you want to. Then, choose the jeans that you feel most comfortable in, but that also look fashionable.

So, mom jeans anyone? No, how about jeans that let you be a mom, and do the tasks that you have to do as mom, while still keeping your tush covered, your style in tact, and your comfort levels where they should be.
