How to spend the money you make
59As a teenager, one of the best things about working is that you will be earning some money on a regular basis. The one problem that no teenager ever faces is figuring out how to spend that money, for most teenagers, spending money is the easiest part of making it. The reason that spending the money is so easy is because of how many things are out there that you want to buy. Just because you know, what you want to spend your money on doesn't mean that you should spend your money on it.
The one problem that most teenagers have with spending their money is their parents. Chances are if you are working, your parents have their own ideas about how you should go about spending your money. Perhaps they want you to put money away for college or they just want you to spend a portion of each paycheck on stuff you want. No matter what the reason is your parents will have a big say in what you do with your money because you are still a child and it is only with their permission that you can work while going to school.
The first thing that you are going to want to do when figuring out how to spend your money is to sit down and talk with your parents about what they expect. This way you can see what their side of the story is and you can give them the reasons you want to spend your money a certain way. As you talk, try to come to a compromise that will work out for both of you in regards to your money.
With that being said, you should keep in mind that saving a portion of the money that you make is a good idea. Saving some of the money will allow you to buy bigger items that are more expensive, but it can also help you out when you become an adult. For example, having money saved ahead of time can help you put a deposit down on an apartment of your own or help you buy your first car. When saving your money you can split it into different groups. A portion of your money should go into a savings account or a CD where it can accrue interest. This money is usually about one third of your check or more if you wish. The other portion can be put into a different savings account and can be sued to save up for buying a new computer or something else that you want.
In addition to saving your money as a teenager if you have any bills that need to be paid you will need to spend the money that you make on those bills. Some parents will be willing to pay a portion of your bills, but if it is for something that you want you will need to have the money to cover those bills. For example, some parents will want you to pay your own car insurance so you can drive, others will want you to pay half of the insurance. If you have a cell phone you will need to pay that bill each month, or perhaps your parents pay the phone portion, but you have to pay for the extras.
How you spend the money that you make each pay period is going to depend on the type of person that you are and what you and your parents agree to. These decisions are going to be based on the values that you and your parents have, so before you blow your money on useless items make sure you talk it over with your parents to see what they expect.
