Saving money is a concern for almost every family in America these days. Everyone is looking at ways they can cut costs, make the things they have last longer, and get better returns on their investments. One area that is really important for a lot of people lately is childcare. Some families that had only one worker before are now sending mom and dad to work to make ends meet. This requires the use of childcare in many situations and there are all kinds of ways to make it work best for you. Here is some information that will help you save money on child care.

Many people are very excited about having children and it's very important to them. But some people forget that a few weeks after the baby is born, you usually have to go back to work. And there are expenses and other burdens that go along with having children as well as all of the wonderful things too. Some people just have to have someone watch their baby while they work so they can provide all the things they need for themselves and their child. Most estimates say that you will need a daycare or babysitter for about four years until they reach school age. And younger children can often cost more to watch because they need more regular and constant attendance than older children.

One of the best ways to save money on childcare costs is to simply ask family and friends to help when they can. It may be time to reconcile with the in-laws and parents and "let" them watch the grandkids. They may do it for free (although you shouldn't expect this to be the case) or will do it for less than a daycare or babysitter would cost. They may not be able to watch the kids all the time but even one day a week that they don't have to go to the daycare can save you a lot of money in the long run. Another great aspect of having family watch your children is that you already know them well and can trust them to make good decisions.

Some people have the option of changing their work schedule and you may be able to change the time you work and do opposite shifts from your spouse. This may be difficult for some people but could potentially save a lot of money. This could also put extra strain on relationships and change they way that the family functions. Some people are just simply not willing to make this sacrifice or it isn't worth the trouble and lost sleep. Other people may have the option of working from home or doing some of their work from a home based office. This may extend the length of the work day to be able to get all the hours you need in, but you will also be able to care for your child directly and stay home with them. Of course doing something like this may take a lot of coordination and really good time management. You would also need to be working in an industry that would work from home and have a flexible company that will allow this to happen. You also may have options if you are a lower income family to qualify for assistance or free childcare from the county or city you live in. This may take some research to find out but could end up benefiting you a lot.

Some say that childcare is the second most significant cost of living, second only to rent or a house payment. Some studies say that it can cost about 7.5% of a family's income to have good childcare in place. Obviously, the costs you incur to get your child into daycare will vary from place to place and also depend on how much time they will be spending there, how old they are, and if they have any special needs or other considerations. If you work locally, you may be able to start your own babysitting club. Some moms can take turns taking care of the children while the other moms are at work. This can be done for free or for a low cost and can benefit all of the families involved. It can help save a lot of money for everyone.

Different methods and things will help save more money depending on how old you child is. If you have a younger child, you can consider sharing childcare with a friend, family member or neighbor that may also have a small child. You of course need to make sure that expectations are clear for everyone involved. As difficult as it is with family and friends, you probably need to treat it more as a business relationship than anything else. If you are a participating member of a church they may also offer daycare services to members of their congregation for a discount or even for free. Try and see what is out there that you can take advantage of.

Some of the best money saving tips for childcare involve taxes. Depending on your income level and other factors, you should be able to claim a child tax credit when you file your tax return. This may not be as noticeable because all of the savings will happen at one time and then just be rolled into your income tax refund. But you can plan ahead and use the tax return you get and keep it in a special account used just for childcare expenses. Normally the tax credit is worth about $600 for one child and $1200 for two children or more. Although it doesn't sound like a big deal, this can really go a long way especially if you are using other strategies to save in addition to claiming this tax credit. Of course you need to play it smart and never try to get more out of the system than you should because this could bring stiff penalties and more severe problems. Another program with significant tax savings can be what is called a flexible spending account or cafeteria plan. Many employers offer these along with insurance plans. A flexible spending account can be used for medical and other regular expenses like child care. You select an amount up to $5000 per year that you anticipate needing to use for childcare or related expenses and that number is divided by the number of pay periods you will have throughout the year. The same amount is deducted from your paycheck each time so it is a consistent thing. The nice thing about flexible spending is that they money is deducted from your check pre-tax (similar to may 401k programs or IRAs) so you don't have to pay taxes on the flexible spending money and your tax liability will also be decreased when tax time comes around. Another great thing about this type of program is that you don't have to think about it too much because it just comes out through payroll deduction. Again, both of these methods will give results in one lump sum rather than gradually throughout the year but they are still worth the trouble and effort.

Another way of saving on childcare that many people overlook is to just shop around. There may be more private daycare centers that can be less expensive than big corporations and you need to shop around for them. You can also find good quality care at places like the YMCA and local churches.

You may also be able to arrange something through work. If you can get enough people involved, you may be able to get a corporate discount through work or some similar arrangement. You may also be able to get your company to pitch in some of the expenses of having childcare and help you. Some companies may be more flexible about this type of thing and getting organized may be the most difficult part of making it happen.

If you have older children you may be able to spend even less money on childcare. Many public schools offer half day preschool for four year olds and it is often free. Most public schools also offer after school programs that are free or very inexpensive for people enrolled in the school. They also offer an opportunity for your children to interact with their friends from school that are also there at the same time. It is a great opportunity to be with kids from school in a setting other than the classroom.

Some people even choose to run a childcare service themselves. There are some certifications to get from various agencies but you could even replace your income from work with a daycare while being able to take care of your own child. This may not be the best fit for some people, especially those who may not be excited about watching other people's children. You have to consider you options carefully and make sure that you keep all the rules and regulations involved if you want to avoid penalties.

A babysitting co-op can work nicely for babysitting and/or regular childcare. Round up friends and/or neighbors and work it out. One suggestion: if you have a friend or neighbor who wants to help out with babysitting but she doesn't have children add a module to the co-op for doing things like cooking a meal, mowing a lawn, running errands to accomodate those that don't have kids to put into the co-op.
