Introduction

Smoking is an addicting habit that can be hard to quit. You could decide to stop smoking for several reasons. The main reason that you should stop smoking is that is bad for your health. Smoking is not only bad for the person who is smoking the cigarettes but it is also bad for the people who are around that are inhaling the smoke in the air. When you quit smoking you reduce your chances of developing respiratory problems, lung disease and heart problems. Although smoking might seem like an impossible habit to give up there are some steps that you can take to break the smoking habit forever.

Instructions
Difficulty level: very difficult

Steps:

1. First you need to make the decision that you definitely want to stop smoking. Set a date that will help you meet your goal. Give you self a reasonable and realistic amount of time to quit. For example, say your birthday is in 3 months and you want to quit smoking by your birthday. That would give you enough time to wean yourself off of your habit. Some people will need even more time then that.

2. Give yourself a goal of how many cigarettes you can have in one day and stick to it. Eventually your amount of cigarettes you allow yourself should be smaller as days go by.

3. By your cigarettes by the pack and not by the carton. Even though it seems like it will save you money when you buy by the carton. This way you won't think to yourself you can smoke as many cigarettes that you want because you have more pack in the cupboard.

4. Think about the times that you smoke. Do you only smoke when you drink? If so then think about how you can cut back on drinking until you feel that you don't need a cigarette every time you drink. Do you smoke while you are driving? Make a rule for your car that there is no smoking allowed, not even for you. When you feel like you need a cigarette make small changes in your routine.

5. Think about something else when you are thinking about having a cigarette. For instance, you could drink a glass of water or chew a stick of gum. When your hands and your mouth are already occupied then the thought of having a cigarette will go away.

6. Challenge yourself to smoke in chosen designated places. Don't allow smoking inside the house. You could choose to always smoke outside when you do smoke a cigarette. When you have limited places to go when you smoke, the thought of having a cigarette won't come so often.

7. Go and see your doctor. Sometimes a nicotine supplement will help you break your addiction more easily. Supplements like nicotine gum and a nicotine pack will work for some people but not all people.
