Many people spend more money than needed when they go grocery shopping. By learning some simple tricks you can cut down your costs when grocery shopping.

Step one:
Make a list. The easiest way to save money while you are grocery shopping, according to the professionals, is to carefully make a list of what you need and then stick to the list. People who go to the grocery store without a list are more tempted to pick up items that they don't need, or even pick items on impulse. To start your list you will need to plan your money for the week, check your pantry to see what you already and have and write down the remaining items that you need on your list.

Step two:
When possible buy store brands. Buying store brands can save you a ton of money at the grocery store, so before vetoing the idea all at once you should give it some thought. The one thing about store brands that many people don't realize is that they are actually made by the big label companies, they are just packaged differently. Buying the store brand will allow you to save up to fifty percent off an item, and the best part is that you will probably not even notice the taste difference. Some items that taste the same regardless of what price you pay are bread, peanut butter, cheese, fruit, milk, and baking items.

Step three:
You can also use ads and coupons whenever possible. Using the store ads will allow you to save money on items that are featured in the ads for that week, such as buy one get one free or something similar. You can also shop the sale ads and find coupons that match the items that are on sale so that you save even more money. You can shop at a variety o different stores so that you get the lowest price possible or you can find a store that will allow you to price match so that you get the lowest price without having to go to different stores. If your store requires a discount card to get the sale prices be sure to sign up for it otherwise you will not get the sale price.

Step four:
To save even more money you can buy in bulk. You can buy in bulk at regular grocery stores when they have a case lot sale, but you can buy in bulk at warehouse stores, such as Costco and Sam's Club on a regular basis. However, you will need to watch out for the impulse items that are also in the store. Shopping at these stores will save you money if you are disciplined enough not to buy the impulse items that are placed strategically around the store. What you do when you buy in bulk is separate the food, such as meats, into smaller portions and then freeze them until you are ready to use them. You can also save money on other items besides food, such as toilet paper, napkins, and paper towels.

Step five:
While you are shopping at the various stores you will want to keep your eye out for bargains that you won't find elsewhere. Most of the time the bargains are going to be on items that they are no longer going to be carrying so they are closing them out, but it can also be on items that they simply have too much of. You can find bakery and meat items that are being closed out because the expiration date is coming closer. You can also find good deals at close out stores because they sell items that need to be cleared out because the packaging has changed or the supplier just needs to get rid of them.

Don't forget, you're also more likely to overspend at a grocery store if you're shopping on an empty stomach. Similar to how everything on the lunch menu looks great when you skipped breakfast earlier in the day. Do yourself and budget a favor, eat a filling meal BEFORE going to the grocery store. You'll be more likely to only buy what you need and not to constantly add items to your list while there. Similar to how fat people(I include myself) need to avoid the cookie and candy aisles if at all possible.

Great advice - I always purchase the Sunday paper for the coupons - they more than pay for the paper and save me a lot of money at the grocery store.
