Number one: Paycheck
If you are getting a refund from the Internal Revenue Service each year you are having too much money withheld for your federal taxes during the year. You will need to adjust your withholding status with your employer to lower the amount of taxes that are being withheld.

Number two: Food
This category is going to include both buying groceries and eating out. There are a variety of different things that you can do to save money on groceries, such as using coupons and shopping for items that are on sale. Many people end up wasting a ton of money from eating out all of the time. By cutting back how many times you eat out during the week you can save hundreds of dollars a year. Food is also going to include any coffee or sodas that you buy for work or snacks that you buy at a convenience store on the way to work.

Number three: Transportation
This area is going to include money that you pay for car insurance and fuel costs. Transportation can also include car payments that you have to make each month and your car repair bills. If you have to pay any kind of parking fees or money to ride public transportation those expenses would also be in this category.

Number four: Travel
This area will include all of the vacations that you take and any travel that you have to do for work. You will need to look at how much money you spend on airfare, hotel rooms, or how much you are paying for cruises. There are various things that you can do to reduce the amount of money that you are spending on traveling, whether it is for pleasure or for work.

Number five: Investments
Setting money aside for investments is different than saving money for a cash reserve. You need to be putting money away for retirement, as well as saving money for a cash reserve. When it comes to investing you can save money on taxes by minimizing how much you need to pay, but you can also maximize your return by avoiding certain mistakes.

Number six: Utilities
You want to take the required steps so that you can save money on all of your utilities, which includes water, electricity, and heating. There are numerous things that you can do to help reduce your consumption so that you can save money.

Number seven: Entertainment
Every person spends some money on entertainment each month, whether it is renting movies or playing golf. You want to look into different things that you can do to help reduce the amount of money that you are spending on entertainment, such as going to the matinees for a movie or renting a movie instead of going to the movies.

Number eight: Television, Phone, & Internet
While television and the internet are not a necessity most people view them as one, but all three of these additional means of communication is getting expensive. Look into different bundles that your company may provide to see if you can save on these costs. You can also look into reducing the package that you have to save on costs; sometimes signing a contract will lower your costs as well.

Number nine: Banking, Credit & Debt
Many banks charge fees for checking accounts, such as monthly maintenance fees and checking purchases. You will also be paying interest on your credit cards or other debt, which can add up over time. You want to make sure that you are not paying more than you should by comparing what you are paying with what others are paying, if it is higher than what others are paying you might want to switch companies to save money.

All of the money that you save by cutting costs in these different areas should be used towards building your savings. By cutting costs in the different areas, even just by a little bit, you can quickly grow your cash reserve.
