If you are looking for different ways to pay for your college education, you have probably heard about academic scholarships. Academic scholarships aren't only for the students with a 4.0 GPA. Even though you may not have a high GPA and you tested lower on the SAT, you may still be eligible for an academic scholarship. There are 3 main qualities you need to possess in order to obtain an academic scholarship:
- The ability to organize and prioritize
- The ability to write and demonstrate that you are a scholar
- The ability to inform others who you are through your writing.
Sounds simple enough right? It may sound easy, but it takes some hard work and dedication on your part. First, let's take a look at your ability to organize and prioritize. What does this mean to you? This means you need to pay attention to the little details, like the scholarship application deadline. If you don't get your application in early and on-time, you will miss out on the chance to have your education completely paid for. Now this also pertains to your ability to read through the application and fill out every question. You also need to include all the extra documents that are required by the school. Pay attention to detail and this will really push your application to the top of the pile.
The ability to write and demonstrate that you are a scholar; what does that mean to you? This means you need to write on a variety of topics that the University or college is going to assign to you. They will ask for a small sample of your writing in your scholarship application. Some schools will want to see one essay while others may want to see 3 or 4. This is probably the hardest part for anyone that is trying to obtain a scholarship. The essay writing will include several re-writes and you will probably be really tired of looking at that essay once you finally mail it off to the school.
The last part of your scholarship application will need to describe who you are. The school will want to see how you can convey your ideas and insights through your essays and your other work. This means you actually need to know a little bit about yourself before you just randomly start writing. You need to present yourself to the school in a fashionable manner. They want to see what makes you stand out from all the other applications. This is when detail is a good thing. Always look over your scholarship application numerous times and decide if you can elaborate a little bit on some sections. Be careful about the word limit though, the last thing you want to do is go over the word limit and have your perfect application tossed.
Scholarship Tips
With all the competition out there to receive academic scholarships, how can you make your scholarship application stand out from all the others? What can you do to land an academic scholarship? Here are a few tips that may help you out:
Tip # 1 - Start young. The best thing you can do is to start getting good grades at a young age. Try to maintain above a 3.6 throughout middle school and high school. If you can keep a 4.0, your chances will significantly improve.
Tip # 2 - Join extra clubs. One thing scholarship judges are looking for is a person that is a natural leader. They want their applicants to have experience leading other people. If you have the opportunity to become the debate team leader, take it. Try signing up for community programs also. The more experience you have on your application, the better.
Tip # 3 - Apply to several different colleges. Let's say you have had your heart set on Boston College for 10 years, but a local University is willing to give you a full-ride academic scholarship, what should you do? Well, if you want to save some money you should go to the school that wants you to come. They want you to come there so bad that they are actually paying you to come there. College is a time to think logically, so be smart and go where the money is.
Tip # 4 - When you are looking over the scholarship application, pay close attention to detail. You need to answer every single question and provide all the necessary documentation with your application. If the school wants a portfolio of your art, you better send them one that looks professional. Remember, this is your future here; this is not a time to rush through the application just to get it in the mail.
Tip # 5 - Mail your application in on time. This is the most important thing you will do. If you miss the deadline, you will have to wait an entire year to apply for the scholarship again and there will be a new graduating class of high-school students that will compete for the scholarship this time.
Academic scholarship applications also want to see what you have done for your community. The school wants to learn a little bit about what you are like. They want to see a person that spends time making their community better through volunteer work and community service projects. If you have ever served on student-government, this will really help your chances of receiving an academic scholarship. Students that have served on student government have a strong desire to succeed, at least that is how most scholarship judges see it.
Applying for a scholarship is the smartest thing you can do. Not only are you giving yourself a good chance to pay for your entire college education for free, but you are learning a lot. You are creating a great path for your career because you are a `go-getter'. Hopefully you have a strong desire to succeed in your schooling and eventually with your career. If you successfully implement the qualities the schools are looking for, you will be highly marketable to several schools.
One thing you need to know about academic scholarships is that they are extremely competitive. Some schools have over 12,000 applicants for one scholarship. This means you really need to stand out from everyone else. This also means that you should not limit yourself to just one scholarship. Look around at numerous academic scholarships to see if you can find a scholarship with fewer applicants. The reason academic scholarships are so competitive is that everyone has heard about them. They are well-publicized so practically everyone that has a high GPA is going to apply.
People love to receive an academic scholarship because there is a strong sense of pride if you are chosen for the scholarship. It is really impressive to tell your co-workers someday that you received a full-ride academic scholarship. Immediately, all your co-workers will put you in the `smart' category. It is hard not to be impressed by an academic scholarship, especially considering all the people you beat out to win the scholarship.
You need to read through all the qualifications before you apply for an academic scholarship. Normally there will be 3 or 4 different types of academic scholarships so if you don't have a 4.0 GPA or you aren't a female or of a certain race, move on to the next scholarship. Several schools offer academic scholarships based on the student's race, gender, age, and other factors.
The award that comes with an academic scholarship is normally much higher than athletic scholarships and other scholarships. Not only will your entire tuition be paid for, you will receive excess money for your books and even your cost of living expenses. It is basically like being paid to go to school. Even if the academic scholarship you are given doesn't cover everything, you still have a generous amount of money coming your way. The costs of going to college will be much more affordable and you can get out of college debt-free or with a minimal amount of debt. This is a huge advantage over your co-workers that could be carrying around $30,000 in student loan debt.
If you have outstanding grades, you can go to practically every school in the nation. The expensive schools like Duke, Stanford, and Harvard all come with a pretty big price tag. If the school has given you an academic scholarship, you should thank your lucky stars for applying. What really makes an academic scholarship helpful, besides the fact that it pays for your schooling, is that it can help you become marketable. You can put down your scholarship on your resume and some of the nations prestigious companies will start knocking on your door. This is a great way to get into the career you have always wanted.
Depending upon the school you are trying to go to, the qualifications may be intense. Some schools will look back into your middle school years to see if you have always maintained a 4.0GPA. Since you are competing against other students with high GPA's, you need to have some extra "stuff" to offer the school. This comes in the form of memberships, clubs, and your affiliation with different organizations. If you were the class valedictorian, this can really increase your chance of obtaining an academic scholarship.
Schools are looking for an individual that has spent several months in a leadership position. This is why students that served on student government have a greater chance of receiving the scholarship. If you weren't elected class president, did you at least participate in other clubs? Did you join the band, drama club, debate team, or another club with your school? The more experience you have in a leadership position, the more attractive you will look for the school.
Now what about the average student that maybe didn't have the best grades, but they had some skills with other things? Let's say you like to sew and you won a few competitions for your sewing skills? This may not get you into the University of North Carolina, but there are some schools out there that are willing to give you an academic scholarship. You just need to find them. Don't be afraid to apply to the smaller schools and community colleges. If you are at the top of your class at these schools, you will receive a scholarship. After you complete 2 years there, you can transfer your credits over to a larger school and graduate from there. Some schools actually have academic scholarship programs for transfer students.
Speak to several schools about their scholarships. Find the school that is the best fit for you, but don't just limit yourself to one school. Apply to multiple colleges and apply for academic scholarships with each of them. Talk to their scholarship office to find out what the requirements are. You also need to make sure you understand when the scholarship deadline is. It is important to mail in your application early so that it doesn't get tossed out for being a day late. Try using FedEx or certified mail to send your scholarship application, this way you can track it in the mail and you will know when the scholarship office receives it.

Most kids who do all that you have said are eligible to join the National Honor Society. One school we visited while out on our college hunt offered $10,000.00 a year for all four years, automatically to members of the National Honor Society! At the time, this private school cost about $28,000.00 to attend. So the NHS scholarship cut a hefty chunck out of tuition.

Loved your hub. I believe that schools should have their counselors educate kids about this kind of stuff the minute they enter high school. I received a number of grants and scholarships when I went to college but I basically had to find out about the money on my own. I educated my son about all this as early as 14. When he graduated he could have received alot of money because of his great grades and writing ability but he chose to go into the Navy. What's a mom to do?!!:)
